What is Self-Adhesive Label Material? What Types Are Available?
Self-adhesive label material is essentially a composite material consisting of three components: face stock, adhesive, and release liner. The face stock material directly determines its application, weather resistance, and aesthetic appeal. Today, I'll explain the most commonly used self-adhesive materials by category—whether for personal use, e-commerce packaging, or corporate customization, you'll be able to match your needs precisely after reading this.

Category 1: Paper-Based Self-Adhesive
Paper-based self-adhesive is the most common and economical type. It features soft texture and excellent printability, making it suitable for ordinary indoor, dry environments. It's also the material we encounter most frequently in daily life. There are three main subtypes:
1. Coated Paper (Art Paper) Self-Adhesive
This is the "all-purpose" option among paper-based materials. It has a smooth, flat surface with good ink absorption, capable of producing clear and vibrant graphics and text. Whether it's a colorful logo or detailed instructions, it presents perfectly. It's also cost-effective, making it ideal for bulk customization.
Applications: Product labels (food, cosmetics, daily necessities), shipping labels, office signage, promotional stickers. For example, snack packaging labels and skincare bottle labels are mostly made of coated paper.
Note: Not water-resistant or oil-resistant; avoid application on damp or greasy surfaces. Also unsuitable for long-term outdoor use as it may yellow from moisture.

2. Kraft Paper Self-Adhesive

Features a natural kraft color with a vintage texture, strong and tear-resistant. Most are made from eco-friendly materials, aligning with today's low-carbon philosophy. After printing, it exudes a simple, premium feel—perfect for products with a retro or eco-friendly positioning.
Applications: Specialty food packaging, handmade product labels, shipping stickers, document classification tags. Especially suitable for products emphasizing "natural" or "handcrafted" qualities, such as farm specialties or handmade accessories.
Note: Limited color options (mainly kraft and off-white). Color reproduction is inferior to coated paper. Also not water-resistant; avoid humid environments.
3. Thermal Paper Self-Adhesive
Features a special thermal coating that requires no ink—text and barcodes can be printed quickly using thermal printers. The printed text is clear, operation is convenient, and costs are extremely low. Ideal for scenarios requiring batch, rapid printing.
Applications: Supermarket price tags, food delivery receipts, electronic shipping labels, pharmacy price tags. For example, supermarket price tags and food delivery receipts are typically thermal paper self-adhesive.
Note: Sensitive to high temperatures and direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to sun or heat can cause fading or disappearance of text. Not suitable for long-term storage or outdoor use.

Category 2: Film-Based Self-Adhesive
If paper-based materials are the "general-purpose" option, film-based materials are the "specialized" choice. They are tough, waterproof, oil-resistant, and wear-resistant, capable of withstanding complex environments such as humidity, outdoor conditions, and extreme temperatures. Prices are slightly higher than paper-based options, but the practicality is stronger. There are four commonly used subtypes:
1. PET (Polyester) Self-Adhesive
PET features a smooth, glossy surface with high transparency. It's waterproof, oil-resistant, scratch-resistant, and high-temperature resistant. It doesn't deform or fade easily, and delivers a premium feel after printing. It's the preferred material for high-end products and can also meet industrial-grade requirements.
Applications: Cosmetic bottle labels, electronics labels (mobile phones, computer accessories), industrial equipment identification, outdoor small advertisements. For example, transparent labels on skincare bottles and mobile phone battery labels often use PET. Some high-temperature scenarios (such as near ovens) can also use this material.
Note: Relatively rigid texture; not suitable for curved or irregular surfaces. Higher price point; bulk customization costs more than paper-based options.
2. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) Self-Adhesive
PVC offers exceptional flexibility—it can bend and stretch to perfectly conform to curved and arched surfaces. It's waterproof, oil-resistant, and difficult to damage. Available in rich colors and transparent options, it adapts to various complex labeling needs.
Applications: Beverage bottle labels, cosmetic tube labels, curved container labels, outdoor poster stickers. For example, labels on mineral water bottles and facial cleanser tubes are mostly PVC. Some low-temperature scenarios (-40°C to 0°C) can also use this material.
Note: Not high-temperature resistant; deforms and shrinks above 60°C. Also not environmentally friendly; some applications (such as food contact) are unsuitable. Check compliance when purchasing.
3. PP (Polypropylene) Self-Adhesive
PP is lightweight yet tough, waterproof, oil-resistant, and wear-resistant. It's eco-friendly, non-toxic, and recyclable. Printing results are soft and natural, available in both transparent and opaque options—a choice that balances environmental friendliness with practicality.
Applications: Food packaging labels (yogurt bottles, snack bags), outdoor promotional stickers, children's toy labels. Especially suitable for direct food contact scenarios (food-grade PP required). Can withstand light wind and rain for outdoor use.
Note: Smooth surface may result in poor ink adhesion for some inks. Use specialized inks during printing to prevent text from peeling off.
4. Synthetic Paper Self-Adhesive
Synthetic paper is a new eco-friendly material combining the advantages of both paper and film. It's tough, waterproof, oil-resistant, sunlight-resistant, and temperature-resistant. It doesn't yellow or damage easily, remaining intact even after long-term outdoor use. Printing effects are paper-like with a soft texture.
Applications: Outdoor advertising, traffic signage, scenic area guide stickers, long-term warehouse labels. For example, community notices, scenic area directional labels, and outdoor equipment identification are suitable for synthetic paper. Some high-end product packaging can also use this material.

Note: Higher price point; suitable for scenarios requiring high weather resistance. Unnecessary for ordinary daily use.
