How Self-Adhesive Labels Are Manufactured: A Full-Process Breakdown

We interact with countless self-adhesive labels every day, but do you know how these seemingly simple items are produced? Behind them lies a complex industrial chain. Today, as an industry practitioner, I will take you through the complete production journey of a self-adhesive label—from raw materials to finished product—lifting the veil on its mysteries.

The Structure of Self-Adhesive Materials
To understand the production process, we must first understand what a self-adhesive label looks like. Standard material consists of three layers:
1.Face Stock: The top layer that accepts printing and comes into direct contact with the applied surface. It can be made of paper or plastic film.
2.Adhesive: The middle "glue" layer, which determines how strongly the label sticks and whether it can be removed.
3.Liner: The bottom layer, typically a silicone-coated paper that protects the adhesive. This layer is peeled off during application.

Raw Materials for Self-Adhesive Labels

1. Face Stock: The "Face" of the Label
Face stocks are divided into two main categories:

Coated Paper: The most versatile; used for pharmaceutical and food labels.
Thermal Paper: Used for supermarket receipts and express delivery waybills.
Kraft Paper: Common for wine bottles and retro-style packaging.
Destructible Vinyl/Paper: Used for anti-tamper security seals.
Metallized Coated Paper: Used for high-end cosmetics.
Foil Paper: Used for premium food packaging.
Film-Based:
PET (Polyester): Heat-resistant; ideal for electronics.
PP (Polypropylene): Squeeze-resistant; common for daily chemical tubes.
PE (Polyethylene): Highly flexible; used for packaging requiring conformability.
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): Weather-resistant; suitable for outdoor use.
Synthetic Paper: Waterproof and tear-resistant.
Laser Holographic Film: Used for anti-counterfeiting packaging.

2. Adhesive: The "Soul" of the Label

Adhesives are categorized by:
Composition: Rubber-based (high tack) vs. Acrylic-based (good initial adhesion and aging resistance).
Performance: Permanent (cannot be removed without damage) vs. Removable (peels off cleanly without residue).
Application Process: Hot-melt (suitable for high-speed labeling) vs. Water-based emulsion (preferred for eco-friendly food and pharmaceutical applications).

3. Liner: The Protective Base

The most common liner is Glassine Paper. It is smooth and strong; once coated with silicone, it becomes a non-stick "protective film" for the adhesive.

Two Core Pieces of Equipment in Material Production

1. The Coating Machine (with Laminating Function)
This is the key equipment that transforms raw materials into the master roll of self-adhesive material.
Workflow:
1.Unwinding: The face stock and liner are loaded onto the machine separately.
2.Coating: Adhesive is evenly applied to the back of the face stock.
3.Drying: The web passes through an oven to remove solvents or water from the adhesive.
4.Laminating: The coated face stock is pressed together with the silicone-coated liner.
5.Rewinding: The result is a wide-width master roll, typically over 1 meter wide and several thousand meters long.
Technical Challenges: The adhesive coating must be absolutely uniform. Too thick causes oozing; too thin results in poor adhesion. Drying temperatures must be precise: too high damages the material, while too low leaves the adhesive uncured.

2. The Slitting Machine

In addition to the coater, material plants require mixing systems for adhesives and testing equipment for tack and thickness. However, the master rolls cannot be sent directly to printers because different presses and label products require specific roll widths.
. Function: The slitter cuts the wide master rolls into various narrow widths specified by customers and rewinds them into smaller rolls for easy transport and use.
. Critical Impact on Quality: This step is crucial for downstream printing quality.
   Burrs or paper dust generated during slitting can stick to printing plates, causing white spots on the printed product.
   Uneven edges can cause the material to wander on the press, leading to misregistration.
   Inconsistent winding tension can cause material vibration during printing, resulting in die-cutting position shifts.

The Processing Workflow at the Label Printing Plant

Once the slit rolls arrive at the label printing factory, they undergo multiple processes to become finished labels.
1. Printing: Depending on requirements for precision, volume, and cost, the appropriate printing method is selected:
    Flexographic Printing: The traditional workhorse of the industry; ideal for text and line art.
    Rotogravure/Flexo (Solid Ink): Suitable for large solid areas and full-page coverage.
    Digital Printing: Best for short runs and variable data, such as unique QR codes.
    Offset Printing: Ideal for high-precision, magazine-quality labels.
    Note: Different methods have distinct advantages, and printers choose based on specific order needs.

2. Post-Processing:

    Hot Stamping: Added if a metallic finish is required.

    Laminating: Applied to protect the printed surface.
3. Die-Cutting: A die-cutting blade cuts out the individual label shapes. The excess waste matrix is then stripped away, leaving rows of cut labels still attached to the liner.
4. Reslitting (Optional): If the order requires even narrower finished rolls, the printer will slit the material again to the final usage width.
5. Inspection and Packaging: Finally, the labels undergo rigorous checks for print quality and die-cutting precision. Once confirmed to meet specifications, they are packaged and shipped.

The entire workflow at the printing plant requires strict control at every stage to ensure the production of high-quality finished self-adhesive labels.
