In product development, manufacturing, repair, or DIY projects, we often need to bond different materials together securely. However, when faced with a wide variety of materials such as metals, plastics, woods, glasses, ceramics, and a vast array of adhesives like epoxy, instant glue, hot melt glue, structural adhesive, etc., how do we choose the best combination? The answer is clear: systematic testing.
This article will provide you with a practical and actionable testing method to verify the reliability of different material and adhesive combinations before actual application.

I. Define Testing Objectives

Before you start, ask yourself a few key questions:
What is the usage environment? (Indoor/outdoor, high/low temperature, humid/dry)
How much force does it need to withstand? (Shear force, tensile force, peel force)
Are there any aesthetic requirements? (Is it visible, is overflow glue allowed)
Is chemical resistance or aging resistance required?
The answers to these questions will directly affect your testing standards and evaluation criteria.

II. Prepare Test Samples

1.  Material Selection
Choose the types of materials you will actually use, for example:
Aluminum plate vs. ABS plastic
Glass vs. stainless steel
Solid wood vs. acrylic
Tip: Prepare at least 3–5 sets of samples for each material to ensure the statistical significance of the test results.
2.  Surface Treatment
Adhesive performance greatly depends on the surface condition. Common treatment methods include:
Cleaning (removing oil with alcohol, acetone)
Grinding (increasing roughness)
Priming (using a primer to enhance adhesion)
Record the treatment method for each set of samples for subsequent comparison.

III. Select Adhesive Solutions

V. Performance Testing Methods

2.  Peel Testing
Applicable to flexible materials (such as tape, film), observe the resistance during peeling and the failure mode.
3.  Environmental Aging Testing (Advanced)
Place some samples in a simulated environment (such as an 85°C/85% RH humidity chamber, UV aging chamber), and retest the strength after several days or weeks to evaluate durability.
4.  Visual and Tactile Assessment
Are there any bubbles or voids?
Is the glue seam uniform?
Does the failure occur within the adhesive layer (cohesive failure) or at the interface (adhesive failure)? The latter indicates insufficient adhesion.

VI. Common Pitfalls to Avoid

“Strong glue = universal glue”: Different glues have vastly different effects on different materials.
Ignoring surface treatment: Even the best glue can’t stick to an oily surface.
Testing before full curing: The strength may only be 30% of the final value.
Performing only one test: The chance of random error is high, and repeated verification is needed.
