In warehousing, logistics, e-commerce, or manufacturing, cartons are the “first face” of product circulation. The labels attached to the cartons are the key carriers of information. However, have you ever encountered such problems:
•  The label curls or falls off within a few days of being applied.
•  The barcode cannot be scanned, even though it is printed clearly.
•  In humid environments, the label wrinkles and the text becomes blurred.
In fact, these problems are often not due to poor quality of the label itself, but rather because the label material and adhesive have not been matched to the carton material!
Today, let's talk about: What are the specific requirements for self-adhesive labels on different carton materials?

I. Common Carton Material Types

Corrugated Box
The most common type of transport outer box, with a surface made of kraft paper or white paper, which is rough, porous, and highly absorbent.
Folding Carton / White Cardboard Box
Often used for high-end product inner packaging or retail display boxes, with a smooth surface and exquisite printing.
Kraft Paper Box
Brown or yellow in color, with a strong natural fiber feel and a slightly rough surface, commonly used for eco-friendly packaging or courier boxes.
Laminated or Coated Box
The surface is coated with a plastic film, matte varnish, or gloss varnish, which is waterproof and stain-resistant, but smooth and low in surface energy.

II. Core Requirements for Labels on Different Materials

Corrugated Box
The surface is rough, porous, and absorbent, so the label needs high initial tack and strong holding power adhesive; the face material should not be too thin (copperplate paper is prone to curling), and synthetic paper or thick glassine paper labels are recommended.
Folding Carton / White Cardboard Box
The surface is smooth and dense, so ordinary copperplate paper and general-purpose adhesive are sufficient, but attention should be paid to ink compatibility to avoid smudging.
Kraft Paper Box
The surface is rough, contains impurities, and is hygroscopic, so the label adhesive needs to be moisture-resistant; rubber-based adhesive (good initial tack) is recommended to avoid the initial non-adhesion of acrylic adhesive.
Laminated or Coated Box
The surface is smooth and low in surface energy, so the label must use “high-tack modified acrylic adhesive” or “special formula adhesive,” otherwise it will easily fall off; some may require corona treatment to enhance adhesion.

III. Easily Overlooked Details

1.  Cumulative Effects of Environmental Factors
•  Cold Storage (below 0℃): Ordinary adhesive will harden and fail → Low-temperature special adhesive is needed.
•  High Humidity Warehouse (>80% RH): Cartons absorb moisture and expand → Labels need to be moisture-resistant, and adhesive needs to be hydrolysis-resistant.
•  Long-Distance Sea Transport: Severe changes in temperature and humidity + salt fog → PET or synthetic paper + weather-resistant adhesive is recommended.
2.  Labeling Method Determines Material Selection
•  Manual Labeling: The initial tack of the adhesive can be slightly lower.
•  Automatic Labeling Machine: The label backing paper needs to be flat, and the stripping force needs to be stable, otherwise, there will be label jams or flying labels.
3.  Information Retention Time
•  Temporary Turnaround Labels (a few days): Ordinary materials are sufficient.

•  Long-Term Traceability Labels (several months or even years): UV resistance and oxidation resistance are needed to prevent fading.
