In our daily lives, we frequently encounter a wide variety of self-adhesive labels, ranging from price tags on product packaging and logistics express forms to warning labels on various products. They all play vital roles. However, many people have a misconception about the name “self-adhesive labels,” thinking that the adhesive will never dry. Some even worry, “If the glue stays sticky all the time, will it become even harder to peel off after a long period?” In fact, this is not the case. I. The Origin of the Name “Self-Adhesive Labels”

The name “self-adhesive labels” comes from their unique adhesive properties. It is a type of label that comes with its own stickiness and can be directly attached to various surfaces without the need for additional glue application, heating, or moistening. The stickiness of these labels mainly originates from the adhesive layer on their backside, which can maintain a certain level of adhesion at room temperature, allowing the label to easily bond with the surface it is applied to. That is why they are called “self-adhesive” labels.

Self-adhesive labels typically consist of three parts: the face material, the adhesive, and the backing paper. The face material is the surface part of the label, used for printing text, patterns, and other information. Common face materials include paper, film, and metal foil. The adhesive is the key component that gives the label its stickiness. Adhesive molecules have a certain level of activity and can interact with the molecules on the surface of the object to be adhered to, forming an intermolecular attraction that makes the label stick firmly to the surface. This stickiness is relatively stable under certain temperature and humidity conditions but can also be affected by various factors. For example, in high-temperature environments, the fluidity of the adhesive may increase, resulting in stronger adhesion. However, excessive fluidity may also affect the adhesion effect. In low-temperature environments, the stickiness of the adhesive may weaken and even become insufficient. III. What Is the “Adhesive” in Self-Adhesive Labels?

•  Rubber-based Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive: It has strong initial tack and low cost, but its aging resistance is relatively poor.
•  Acrylic-based Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive: It has good weather resistance, high transparency, and is less likely to yellow. It is widely used in high-end labels.
•  Modified/Mixed Adhesive: It combines multiple properties and is suitable for special scenarios (such as freezing, high-temperature, or chemical environments).
Under normal storage and usage conditions, these adhesives will maintain their softness and viscoelasticity for a long time and will not harden like water-based glues. However, this does not mean that they will “never change.”

IV. Will Self-Adhesive Labels Never Fail?

The answer is no. Although self-adhesive labels can maintain their stickiness for a long time under ideal conditions, they are not unchanging. The following factors can cause them to “fail” or “seem to dry out”:
