This is a commonly used “down-to-earth” method in the industry, but it is very effective:
Scratch the blank area of the label forcefully with your fingernail:
•  If a black scratch appears → It is likely a Direct Thermal Label.
•  If there is no mark → It is likely a Thermal Transfer Label.
•  Principle: The surface of thermal paper has a chemical coating that turns black when heated or rubbed; whereas thermal transfer labels are made of ordinary paper or synthetic materials that require ribbon melting to show color and do not change color due to friction by themselves.
