Low-Temperature Labeling Keeps Failing? Hot Melt and Acrylic Adhesives Harden in the Cold—Here Are 3 Fixes That Keep Labels Sticking Perfectly!
Lately, many printing and die-cutting customers have been telling us the same thing: when labeling in low-temperature environments, hot melt and acrylic adhesive labels start acting up—they won't stick properly, spring back, curl at the edges, and trap air bubbles... Not only do end clients complain, but the quality doesn't even pass their own inspection.
Actually, the root cause isn't hard to identify: in cold conditions, adhesives harden and their tack drops significantly. Especially when applying labels below 5°C, the adhesive doesn't get a chance to "grab" the substrate before it loses flowability—so of course it won't adhere. What to do? As a pressure-sensitive label supplier, we've put together three practical solutions. No need to change materials—just adjust your process.

1. Environment Control: Warm Up Your Materials and Substrates First
We recommend keeping die-cutting temperature around 25°C. At this temperature, the adhesive is most stable, the facestock is flexible, and die-cutting accuracy is higher.
Before labeling, avoid direct application below 5°C. Here's the right approach:
•  Let the label material acclimate to room temperature for about 24 hours beforehand
•  Bring substrates (bottles, packaging boxes, etc.) back to around 25°C before labeling
If your workshop is dry, briefly increasing humidity can also soften the facestock for better conformability.
In short: Don't let materials and substrates meet "cold"—warm them up first, then label.

2. Pressure Boosting: Help the Adhesive Grip the Substrate
In low temperatures, adhesives are harder, and natural contact alone isn't enough. You need external force to press the adhesive into the microscopic pores of the substrate surface—that's when it can truly "grab."
Recommendations:
•  For label applicator users: Set roller pressure to 0.3–0.5 MPa
•  For hand labeling: Use a squeegee to press firmly from the center outward, pushing out air bubbles
With sufficient pressure, the adhesive contacts the substrate more fully, reducing edge lift and bubbles.
In short: Without enough pressure, the adhesive can't grip; press it down properly, and tack comes through.

3. Cure Time: Don't Rush Into Cold Storage After Labeling
Many people pack and ship immediately after labeling, or put products straight into cold warehouses—only to find every label curled the next day.
This isn't the adhesive's fault. In the cold, adhesive curing slows down. Both hot melt and acrylic adhesives need time to go from "initial tack" to "final adhesion."
Recommended practice:
•  Let labeled products rest at room temperature (~25°C) for 24 hours
•  Only move them into cold environments or apply stress after the adhesive has fully cured and reached final adhesion
Simply put: Give it a day to "wake up," and it'll hold strong even afterward.
When low-temperature labeling goes wrong, it's not necessarily the label material's fault. Often, it's just that temperature, pressure, and time haven't been dialed in correctly.
